Another URI Mens Basketball coach is coming to East Greenwich. Dan Hurley, who was named the new URI men’s basketball coach in March, said Wednesday night he and his family will settle here in EG.

Hurley said they are renting a house off Shippeetown Road now and that their two sons will attend Our Lady of Mercy School in the fall.

Former URI Basketball coach Jim Baron lives in East Greenwich.

He was at the EG Chamber of Commerce’s Business After Hours at the East Greenwich Yacht Club Wednesday night together with URI President David Dooley and other members of the URI athletic program. There was some definite Ram pride on display among Chamber members.

Hurley said he’s planning to do for URI what he did at Wagner College in Staten Island, New York, despite the leap from a Division III school to a Division I program.

“We are going to use the same formula. We’re going to coach with great intensity and passion,” said Hurley.

Hurley spent two years at Wagner, posting a record of 38-22. Wagner was 13-17 in his first season and 25-5 this year. Hurley took over a team that finished 5-26 in 2009-10.

Basketball coaching is a family affair. Hurley’s father — Bob Hurley Sr. — is a longtime coach at St. Anthony High School in Jersey City. His brother, Bob Jr., has come to URI with Dan, as assistant coach. He and his family have moved to Cranston.

The Hurley brothers spent time in Rhode Island before. Their father ran a basketball camp at Portsmouth Abbey and they would help out.

As for what fans can expect, Hurley said the program will need a bit of time.

“We want to build the team the right way,” he said. “We have specific ideas about who we want to recruit.”

Still, he said the team should be in much better shape in a year.

“Hurleys don’t lose well!” he said, laughing.

After many months of weighing his options, Jerome Frink has decided to commit to Florida International University and its new coach, Richard Pitino.

“He came in and said he was ready to commit,” Ingrid Frink said.

From Hudson County Varsity

The 6-foot-7 Frink also considered Hofstra, Quinnipiac, Iona and St. Bonaventure.

Frink was a major contributor during the last two season in which the Friars went 65-0 with consecutive Tournament of Champion Titles and one national championship. Frink used his power and strength to control the paint. He was a rugged rebounder and interior scorer alongside UCLA-bound Kyle Anderson on a St. Anthony team that won back-to-back New Jersey Tournament of Champions titles and went 65-0 over the past two seasons.

He averaged 16.2 points and 6.5 rebounds in six state tournament games.

Chris Gaston, Mike Rosario and Jio Fontan play for three different colleges in three different conferences but are linked together by the same Puerto Rican national team that hopes to qualify for the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Gaston, Rosario and Fontan all share the same St. Anthony’s pedigree that is considered basketball gold in the metropolitan area and have all gone on to play for Division I schools. Gaston and Fontan went on to play for Fordham University, with the latter transferring to USC early in his sophomore season, and Rosario, an All-American in high school landed at Florida after transferring from Rutgers.

Rosario and Gaston will share a court once again when both try out for the Puerto Rican National team on May 16, with Fontan pushing his former teammates to seize the opportunity.

“Jio is basically the main guy who orchestrated it,” Gaston said. “He called me and told me that he was talking to guys over [in Puerto Rico] and he was the one who put me onto it. He’s the one who has been handling everything for me.”

Fontan, who played with Rosario on the under-19 team three years ago, will not be playing for the Puerto Rican team as he rehabs following surgery to repair a torn ACL he suffered last August.

“I speak with Jio every day,” Gaston said. “He’s hurt right now, so he’s not going to play, but he is going to go over there to hang out with us.”

The Post learned that Gaston and Rosario would be trying out for the Puerto Rican National team last week, and the Fordham star thinks they both have a shot at making the team.

“I think we mesh well, I know what [Rosario] can do,” Gaston said. “We might have a chance of making the team, we just have to perform in the workouts. I think we’re capable of making the team, anything is possible.”

Even if he fails to make the team, just being considered for the team is something Gaston believes is an honor.

“To say that you are part of a national team it’s crazy. I don’t even care if I don’t play, just to be on the team [is an honor],” Gaston said. “I’d make everyone proud and happy, my family and my university. It would be a tremendous, tremendous thing.”

The tryouts take place on May 16, and Puerto Rico will take part in a qualifying tournament in early July.
